Summary
On August 21, 1863, William Quantrill led 400 Confederate irregulars in an attack on the prosperous frontier town of Lawrence, Kansas, killing more than 150 townsmen and burning most of the settlement to the ground. Goodrich considers why this remote settlement was singled out, and also describes the retribution that soon followed, which in many ways surpassed the significance of the massacre itself. Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "One of the greatest atrocities of the Civil War was the Lawrence, Kansas, massacre of August 21, 1863. Four hundred Confederate irregulars led by William Quantrill ravaged this peaceful and prosperous frontier community, killing more than 150 inhabitants while burning the settlement to the ground. Though the dramatic struggle between freedom and slavery began on the eastern border of Kansas in 1854, the area had managed for a while to escape the ravages of the Civil War in the East. This is a dramatic description of the entire event and the circumstances surrounding it, examining the reasons why this remote settlement was singled out for such treatment and its contribution to the brutal retribution that followed. Though largely forgotten, this unique occurrence in American history gave birth to feelings and attitudes that persisted in the area long after the hostilities ended. This thorough examination of the subject is well warranted, adding considerably to our knowledge and understanding of the Civil War west of the Mississippi. --Fred Egloff"
