Summary
As natural as puberty is, boys 10 to 13 are often confused and hesitant about the changes they can see and feel going on in their very own bodies. Changes in You and Me provides easy-to-understand information, colorful illustrations, and acetate overlays that lift the mystery to show the changes. Over 50 line drawings.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 4-7. These books, both of which attend to matters relating to puberty, pregnancy, and related sexual matters (including decision making), are not as encompassing as Harris' It's Perfectly Normal [BKL S 15 94], but they are written in a comforting voice that addresses readers directly and are illustrated with cartoons that moderate the informational load. The discussions are honest and forthright as far as they go, and there are several areas in which the books are especially helpful: each text contains a useful chapter on the opposite sex; the book for boys features information on shaving, jock itch, and jock straps; and the explanation of tampon use in the girls' book is far more detailed than what's usually given. But there are also great and sometimes surprising information gaps. Abortion is not explained in either text (it is briefly defined in the glossary), and there are only three or four sentences about birth control, with virtually no specifics. Readers are encouraged to get these facts from Planned Parenthood or a medical professional. The transparent overlays each book contains are gimmicky, but the black-and-white diagrams and cartoons are appealing (if not precisely detailed), and the full-color jacket photo of kids, which appears on both books, is joyous. Certainly these books are no match for Harris', and the indexes could have been better, but the glossaries will be very useful, and the books will answer many basic questions about pubertal change and maintaining good health during critical years. Set alongside other references on the subject, these guides will nicely serve kids who don't want or need to know everything at once. ~--Stephanie Zvirin"
