Booklist Review: "Gr. 3^-6. These titles from the Kingdom of Life series provide an overview of groups of organisms and their defining characteristics. Fungi covers slime molds, water molds, and true fungi; Invertebrates includes all animals except chordates (i.e., those invertebrates without backbones); and Vertebrates discusses the most highly developed animals, those with enclosed spinal chords. Each volume begins with a discussion of Carl Linneaus' system of binomial nomenclature, the system of classification used by scientists all over the world. Throughout, the authors carefully note the reasoning used to place individual species into these particular groups. Captioned color photographs, short text sections, and insets of related facts make for attractive and nonthreatening layouts. The appended "indentikeys" (which take readers through typical taxonomy identification exercises), lists of Greek and Latin roots, and glossaries will make these books very helpful for young scientists or anyone else interested in biological classification.
