Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 4^-7. Some students are content with simply knowing what a computer can do; others want to know how it works. These two titles in the new Watts Library--Computer Science series tackle the "how" questions. Build Your Own Website introduces HTML, revealing the code behind a relatively simple Web site. Although software is now rendering familiarity with HTML unnecessary, motivated students may still want to design a site from scratch. They'll find the basics here, in language as clear, concrete, and jargon-free as possible. Communications is less hands-on. It covers, in fairly cursory fashion, modems, networks, satellite and wireless technology, and the future of communications. Unfortunately, some photos do not match the text (a problem in many series), and at least one photo appears in both books, illustrating a different concept in each volume. Middle-graders can begin to satisfy their curiosity about computers with these books, but they'll need to look elsewhere for more detail. A glossary and a bibliography of age-appropriate books and Web sites round out the books. --Catherine Andronik"
