This book shows how the self-destructive nature of Hitler's Germany helped ensure its own defeat. Drawing on the work of leading historians, economists, psychologists, and philosophers, the book examines Nazi social, diplomatic, economic, and military policies and blunders, along with Nazism's fundamentally nihilistic worldview.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 8^-12. In this volume of the new History's Great Defeats series, Rice traces 12 years of military history from Hitler's appointment as chancellor of Germany in 1933 until his suicide near the end of World War II. The focus is on Hitler's strategic miscalculations and his overzealous belief in his invincibility. Separate chapters are dedicated to Hitler's leadership, his alliance with Mussolini, the Nazis' ill-fated attacks against Russia, the Holocaust, and technological developments during the war. Descriptions of Hitler are emotionally charged and often interesting, but Rice is at his best when concentrating on the war itself and how key battles changed the power and reputations of various military leaders. The photos are well chosen; close-ups of the important generals and world leaders reveal powerful emotions, and action shots of battles give a sense of the sweeping destruction of warfare. Several bibliographies and a chronology are included. --Roger Leslie"
