Though the United States has been publicly criticized for its use of the death penalty, few people know that some juvenile offenders are even given death sentences. While many people are up in arms about this, others feel that the punishment should fit the crime, regardless of age. Nancy Day explores the complex reasoning and emotions of people on both sides of this issue.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Gr. 6^-10. From the very first page, Day makes it clear that death-penalty debates have deep and gnarled historic roots. In barely more than 60 pages, she explores that history, then discusses the pros and cons, especially in relation to teens who commit criminal acts. Without digressing from her premise, Day bullets supporting evidence for both sides and to reinforce facts, she uses many statistics, then reiterates them in chart or graph form. Effective color photographs are used throughout. With relatively large print, plenty of pictures, and an attractive, multicolored layout, this clearly is directed to middle-graders, who will find the book helpful for understanding a complex and, in light of the school massacres mentioned in several chapters, disconcerting topic. --Roger Leslie"
