Summary
Hours of lost sleep with a tune running around one's head--and that voice. Whose is it, and from which Broadway production? Debates over a performer's repertoire devolving into acid arguments, blows traded, friendships torn asunder. Must the maddening question of exactly who sang just what continue? It cannot--and thanks to this book, it shall not. This massive compendium lists alphabetically every performer who sang on Broadway in the role of a named character, earning mention in the program of a musical or revue. Covering the period of 1866 to 1996, it is an invaluable guide to performances by the well known and the obscure, the career stage performers as well as the one-timers whose names never again graced a playbill. Performers' entries include date and place of birth, date of death, marital status, names of performing relatives or partners appearing in the book, and brief career highlights. Details of specific performances follow: the musical, the venue or venues at which it played, the character and the dates of portrayal, the title of the songs performed, the lyricists and composers of each song and more. Indexes, one of show and song titles, the other of composers and lyricists, allow for easy cross-referencing. A select bibliography is included.

Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Compiled by two people who love Broadway musical theater, these volumes ostensibly list every performer who sang on Broadway in the role of a named character, in a musical play or review, in the period 1866-1996. Although this massive listing includes casts of revivals and cast replacements, it excludes Off-Broadway and road companies as well as shows that the compilers could not locate. The numbered entries (1-10,237) are arranged alphabetically by performer and include, when known, life dates; birthplace; cross-references to entries for parents, spouses, and children who have entries of their own; and information about careers outside musical theater. This is followed by a listing of songs, including the name of the musical, the venue or venues, the name of the character played, the song title, and the names of the lyricist and composer. Each set of show facts is separated by a period. The method of classifying the information within the entry by letter symbols B0 for birthplace, W0 for lyricist, M0 for both marriage and composer) isn't necessarily helpful. The details (about marriages, for example) may be incomplete. However, most entries are easy to read. Two indexes--one of show and song titles and one of lyricists and composers--and a select bibliography complete the work. This set should help with trivia-game challenges and ready-reference questions in addition to complementing titles such as Gerald Bordman's American Musical Theatre: Chronicle 0 (3d ed., Oxford, 2000) and A Chronology of American Musical Theatre 0 (Oxford, 2001) as well as John Stewart's Broadway Musicals, 1943-2004 0 (McFarland, 2005) in larger collections. --Patricia Hogan Copyright 2006 Booklist"
