Summary
A photograph of reproduction of a document contained in a casket presented to Andrew Carnegie by the Alumni Association of the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, in appreciation of funds donated for the construction of what would be known as the Carnegie Laboratory of Engineering. The document contains a diagram of a piece of rail (also included in the casket) and a letter by Robert L. Stevens. According to an inscription on the inside of the casket's lid, the piece of rail is "a portion of the first T rail ever manufactured, the same having been rolled in 1831 at the mills of Sir John Guest in Wales under the personal supervision of Mr. Robert L. Stevens who devised the rail and contracted for its manufacture in quantity for the Camden and Amboy R.R. of which he was president and engineer-in-chief."
