Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Inside the walls of the City Community Faith School, a thousand girls, whose names have been replaced by numbers, labor in prisonlike conditions. The oblivious cityzens believe the girls are being retrained to follow the rules of the Ten Corporations and the City Boss. One child, Little Fearless, strives to keep hope alive for the girls and plots an escape to reveal the truth and gain help. Lott's dystopian tale uses a number of fairy-tale tropes: Little Fearless makes three trips, carries three keepsakes, and sacrifices three treasures; the characters are more symbolic than fleshed out; and the language is simple. The result, while interesting, is only partly successful. Clichés are mixed with some lovely passages, but the symbolism is often heavy handed. Though older teens may need persuading to go past the unappealing cover and the youthful protagonists, those who do will appreciate the political allusions to the war on terror, which younger readers may miss. Suggest this book to thoughtful readers as an accessible gateway to dystopian novels.--Rutan, Lynn Copyright 2007 Booklist"
