Summary
It was 1967 and thousands of U.S. troops were in South Vietnam fighting a war. Late one night, a young U.S. sailor quietly hid behind a tree. He carefully aimed his rifle and waited for his commander's order. He had prepared for this moment for years. The sailor was one of the best-trained fighters in the world-a U.S. Navy SEAL. Look inside to find out how these sailors use their special skills to save lives on land, at sea, and in the air. Book jacket.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "From the Special Ops series, this colorful book introduces the U.S. Navy SEALS, a special-operations force officially created in 1962, though at that time similar U.S. Navy forces had been active for about 20 years. Yomtov touches on the history of the SEALS, their challenging training program, their emphasis on saving lives, and aspects of their operations in the sea, in the air, and on land the three environments that inspired the SEAL acronym. Children intrigued by these operatives will find this a visually dynamic presentation, full of interesting, mostly color photos that show wet-suited frogmen from World War II, as well as SEALS in contemporary Iraq and elsewhere. A large, captioned image appears on nearly every page, accompanied by a short paragraph of information as well as the occasional sidebar or small map. Appended is an illustrated spread on equipment and weapons, a glossary, and recommended reading lists.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2008 Booklist"
