Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "This entry in the diffusely focused Hammond Undercover series (others titles include Horses, Robots, and World War II) displays a definite knack for knowing what's so appalling and appealing about the fanged undead namely, the gore. Martin discusses early proto-vampiric legends and a number of variations found around the world, as well as actual blood-sucking animals and the modern incarnations found in books, TV shows, and movies. But the best stuff is on the historical Vlad (the Impaler) Dracula and the particularly grisly methods he employed to become nearly synonymous with the word bloodthirsty. The layout, dripping with red splatters and all manner of creepy imagery, is busy enough to capture interest and encourage browsing, but not so amplified as to overwhelm attention spans. Some of the pseudo-factual asides are of course intended to unnerve rather than inform, and do so rather effectively. While there's little here that can't be already found elsewhere, as a whole this is a strong overview of an always popular flavor of horror.--Chipman, Ian Copyright 2009 Booklist"
