Where there's smoke there's fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.
Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie's name is on the killer's list.
Short on time to find evidence proving the killer's identity, Stephanie faces further complications when her family and friends decide that it's time for her to choose between her longtime off-again-on-again boyfriend, Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert Ranger. Stephanie's mom is encouraging Stephanie to dump them both and choose a former high school football star who's just returned to town. Stephanie's sidekick, Lula, is encouraging Stephanie to have a red-hot boudoir "bake-off." And Grandma Bella, Morelli's old-world grandmother, is encouraging Stephanie to move to a new state when she puts "the eye" on Stephanie.
With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie's life looks like it's about to go up in smoke.

Booklist Review: "Things are not going well for the Jersey Girl bail-bondswoman Stephanie Plum or for her creator. Stephanie's sometimes-boyfriend Morelli's grandma Bella has put the evil eye on her, and Evanovich seems to be running out of steam in this long-running series. Worse, the story ends with Stephanie going off to Hawaii with & whom? Her cousin Vinny's bail-bonds office is now run temporarily out of stoner Mooner's van, since the office was incinerated. Her sidekick Lula's gone from bigger-than-life to complete cliche (there is a Lula food fight, but it is Stephanie who ends up smelling of sauerkraut). There are a couple of very scary villains, one of whom Stephanie's mother and grandmother are trying to set her up with, although his creepiness only comes out slowly. There's also a vampire story line we kid you not! And besides Morelli, there is Ranger, the other man in Stephanie's life. This long-running series, starting with One for the Money (1994), used to be funny and sexy and smart, but the characters are sketched in increasingly broad strokes and are no longer growing or learning or changing. Or very much fun this outing. To end on a cliff-hanger is just mean.--DeCandido, GraceAnne A. Copyright 2010 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "In Evanovich's 17th installment in the Stephanie Plum series, everyone's favorite bumbling bounty hunter is still torn between the two men in her life-security expert Ranger and tough guy cop Joe Morelli-and still watching bodies pile up around her. With family members attempting to play matchmaker and a serial killer dumping bodies all over Plum's stomping grounds, little has changed in dark and seedy New Jersey. Lorelei King-a veteran Evanovich narrator-slips back into the series and voices Plum with the greatest of ease, clearly enjoying herself from beginning to end. Her narration is effortless yet highly nuanced, funny, and entertaining. King produces a range of unique voices for the book's many characters and offers up a winning performance that will delight Evanovich fans. A Bantam hardcover. (June) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
