Venus and Serena Williams are two of the most successful tennis players of all time. Their success is in part due to the encouragement and support of each other, their mother, and their father. This book explores the lives of two of the greatest athletes of all time and how they achieved their success as a family.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Perhaps the biggest problem in writing a biography of Venus and Serena Williams is that they rack up so many wins, it's impossible to stay current. As this entry in the Sports Families series illustrates, it's always been that way for this tennis-playing duo. The story begins in Compton, California, light years away from the glitz of the Grand Slam circuit. Their father made a deal with gang members who lived in the area to guard the courts while the two girls practiced. Many years later, after both women were champions, their oldest sister was shot to death in Compton a harsh reminder of the lifestyle they had evaded. Mostly, though, this is a tale of minor setbacks and gargantuan successes, as the two sisters face off in a seemingly endless series of Sister Slams. Though Bailey's descriptions of famous matches pale next to her rundown of the sisters' humanitarian missions and fashion lines (tennis boots and trench coats!), the prose is clear, thorough, and well sourced, making this a wonderful intro to these legendary siblings.--Kraus, Daniel Copyright 2010 Booklist"
