Summary
It's the 2070s, and mankind has conquered space, making interplanetary travel possible and igniting the imaginations of the world. It's also vastly increased the amount of dangerous space debris, and someone has to clean it up. Hachimaki, Yuri, and Fee are a crew on that beat, each with their own goals, tendencies, and personal problems- Hachimaki dreams of deep-space exploration in his own ship, Yuri is still recovering from the death of his wife in an accident caused by orbiting debris, and Fee is secretive, but there's a lot going on under the surface!

Just trying to do their jobs in an age of space-age environmental concerns and new vistas of exploration, the crew deals with Hachi's fear of isolation hampering his hopes of joining an upcoming Jupiter mission, keep an eye on the wreckage for signs of Yuri's lost wife, and become unwitting heroes when the only place Fee can still smoke is threatened by terrorists! Dark Horse Manga is proud to present Makoto Yukimura's award-winning hard sci-fi epic Planetes in two omnibus-sized editions, complete with bonus color pages never before seen in America!

"Planetes has it all- strong themes, interesting characters, and great art." -Anime Fringe
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "The crew members of sanitation ship Toy Box have a difficult, dangerous, and somewhat disrespected job clearing Earth's orbit of space debris. But each has a different reason for being in space. Yuri mourns the loss of his wife, Hachimaki wants to make enough money to buy his own ship, and new recruit Tanabe pushes herself to discover her limits. When Hachimaki learns of an upcoming mission to Jupiter, he is willing to battle environmental terrorists, his family's wishes, and his own inner demons to earn a spot. Planetes' strength lies in the development of its characters, particularly Hachimaki and his existential angst as he struggles to overcome his fear of isolation, the fickleness of fate, and his growing loss of empathy. Crisp, clear, and detailed, Yukimura's artwork is grounded in science, bringing a level of reality not usually found in space operas. First published in 2003 and long out of print, this fan favorite has been repackaged by Dark Horse in a two-volume omnibus edition that includes the original color pages.--Volin, Eva Copyright 2016 Booklist"
