"In a barren land, a shimmering glass dome houses the survivors of the Switch, the period when oxygen levels plunged and the green world withered. A state lottery meant a lucky few won safety, while the rest suffocated in the thin air. And now Alina, Quinn, and Bea--an unlikely trio, each with their own agendas, their own longings and fears--walk straight into the heart of danger. With two days' worth of oxygen in their tanks, they leave the dome. What will happen on the third day?"--

Booklist Review: "In a postapocalyptic world in which oxygen levels are dangerously low and vegetation has died off, the Pod houses survivors of the Switch. Quinn is a Premium; his father's position as a director at Breathe affords him many luxuries, if not his parents' love, including enough oxygen tanks to exercise. Bea, his best friend and budding love interest, is a smart Auxiliary who lives in poverty on a limited air supply. Alina is a member of the Resistance, which is plotting against the Pod Ministry. Together, the teens escape to the Outlands and discover a hidden enclave called the Grove, where trees are being grown and resisters are learning to breathe on reduced oxygen levels. A drifter named Maude Blue is also along for the ride, supplying some dark comedy. Short cliff-hanger chapters alternate between the three teens' points of view and build to an ending that will leave fans breathless for the next one. Offer this suspenseful debut to fans of Veronica Roth's Divergent books or Patrick Ness' superior Chaos Walking trilogy.--Dobrez, Cindy Copyright 2010 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "In the start of a new trilogy, Crossan explores a dystopian world in which oxygen is a rare commodity, strictly controlled by the government of a domed city that houses much of the world's diminished population. Sixteen-year-old Quinn, a wealthy Premium, and his best friend Bea, one of the city's many underprivileged Auxiliaries, are about to embark on a camping trip outside the pod when they meet Alina, part of a band of rebels dedicated to replanting trees and restoring the oxygen-rich atmosphere of generations past. As the three work to stay alive in the deadly outside world, their fragile bond is threatened as tensions rise to the point of all-out war and revolution. The concept of Crossan's first YA novel has potential, and it's enlivened by her attention to detail, the trio of narrators, and constant tension. But while the story is well-executed, with characters readers will grow to care about, its reliance on well-worn themes of governmental corruption and class warfare may make it difficult to stand out in a crowded genre.
