Summary
Old MacDonald's farm is full of pigs, cows, sheep, hens, and horses, but what he really loves is his colossal collection of vehicles! From bicycles, tractors, and buses to boats, fire engines, and airplanes, there are lots of things that go on Old MacDonald's farm. And the animals love to join in with the fun, too. Perfect for anyone who loves farmyard animals and vehicles.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "In this rendition of Old MacDonald Had a Farm, the familiar refrain (E-I-E-I-O) is replaced with He loved things that go! Instead of showcasing farm animals, the turn of each oversize page reveals a different type of vehicle. Brightly colored digital illustrations in a flat cartoon style show MacDonald and a fairly sizable assortment of animals gleefully zipping around a pleasant countryside of rolling hills. Of the 10 types of vehicles that MacDonald loves, most are intended for work (tractors, combine harvester, digger) or transportation (bike, truck, bus, train, plane, boat), although MacDonald seems to use them largely for pleasure outings. A firetruck is pressed into service to put out a fire in the henhouse, but even that seems choreographed like a song-and-dance number not entirely inappropriate, considering this is based on a song. Children familiar with the traditional version, especially those into big shiny vehicles, might just go for the wild enthusiasm MacDonald and his animals show for things that go.--Enos, Randall Copyright 2017 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Clarke (Who Woke the Baby?) gives Old MacDonald an insatiable need for speed in this snappy vehicular riff on a classic nursery song. Instead of animal noises and choruses of "E-I-E-I-O," she deploys an array of dings, vrooms, and zooms as the farmer takes to the roads, rivers, and sky: "And on that farm he had a plane./ He loved things that go!" Blanco's (Cinderella's Stepsister and the Big Bad Wolf) cheerful digital illustrations lend a retro mid-20th-century look to the pages, highlighting 1950s-era trucks, convertibles, boats, and farm equipment. A cast of farm animals keeps the story moving, riding along with Old MacDonald in their own vehicles or cheering him on from the sidelines as the farmer pilots a tractor ("with a chug-chug here"), boat ("with a splash-splash there"), train ("everywhere a choo-choo"), and other noisy contraptions. Clarke's adapted stanzas are sure to draw giggles in several places ("And on that farm/ he had a combine harvester"), and Blanco's detail-crammed scenes will have readers poring over the pages.
