Summary
William H. Bonney went from cowboy and gunslinger to pure outlawry. On the one hand, he was charming, fun-loving - often at social events like dances. On the other hand, he had no compunction to coldly kill a man, and anyone else who got in his way. He also proved hard to keep in jail even when caught. It is probably his feats of derring-do escaping from jails that made him most famous and it is the main subject of this biography which follows him until he is finally found and shot in the dead of night.
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Geary, known for his comics-format depictions of notorious murders and other historical figures and events, turns for the first time to the Old West with this account of the last days of infamous outlaw Billy the Kid. It opens in 1881, as the 21-year-old Billy languishes in a New Mexico jail cell, awaiting execution for the murder of a sheriff. A flashback succinctly recounts what had led him to that point, from the petty crimes of his youth to his days as a rustler, a gunslinger, and finally, a full-fledged outlaw. Following a brazen escape from the jail, he's relentlessly pursued by Sheriff Pat Garrett, who guns him down months later. Geary's untoned black-and-white drawings, which resemble vintage woodcuts, evoke the period, and his reliance on captions rather than word balloons is a rough equivalent of voiceover narration for this graphic documentary. Billy's life and, particularly, his violent death have been the subject of innumerable films and songs, most of which romanticize the desperado. Geary's true death sets the record straight in an admirably unsensationalized fashion.--Flagg, Gordon Copyright 2018 Booklist"
