Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "Dawson's latest is a raw, gritty near-future dystopian tale with noir undertones. With Valor National Bank recently taking control of the U.S. in a kind of martial law, 17-year-old Patsy, who is in debt, finds herself forced into service as a bounty hunter and obligated to track down and kill 10 debtors unless they pay up or enter into servitude, just like she has. But when Patsy becomes romantically involved with the son of a man she killed, and she's tasked with killing his brother, can she do it? Though the hard-to-believe and violent premise may turn off some readers, those who can get past it will find a thrilling, if sometimes painful, story that explores the unintended consequences of making irresponsible financial decisions. Unlike the majority of YA novels, which seem to exist in a universe free of the dire economic situations many American teenagers find themselves in, Dawson's latest doesn't shy away from examining the immense impact of class and money on Patsy's life and worldview. Thought-provoking, disturbing, and suspenseful.--Barnes, Jennifer Copyright 2015 Booklist"

Publisher's Weekly Review: "Patsy Klein is a teenage hit woman assigned to kill 10 unfortunate souls who can't pay their debts to Valor Savings Bank, a corporation that has just bought the United States by paying off its debts, and has drafted legislation allowing debtors to be "legally killed in recompense." Patsy is in this situation because of her mother's own debts, and she accepts her horrific mission with a combination of bravery and self-loathing. She begins picking off the people on her list until a handsome companion shows up to accompany her on these dark endeavors, complicating matters (she killed his father). Dawson's (Servants of the Storm) social commentary on corporate finance and its intimate ties to the government is sharp and shot through with irony. She takes this intermingling to the extreme, without losing a playful touch, even as Patsy's story becomes more disturbing. The wit is biting, and the banter between Wyatt and Patsy entertains in a dark, violent story that would pair well with the financial dystopia of Alex London's Proxy and Guardian. Ages 14-up.
