The musical Hamilton inspired Goldstein to create a novel about Theodosia in similar vein, lightly based on historical people and with an emphasis on entertainment. Teenage Theodosia considers various romantic options (the author Washington Irving, the painter John Vanderlyn), but fate brings forth the worst possible candidate, handsome rake Philip, son of her father's greatest enemy, Alexander Hamilton. The clever teenagers delight in sparring, while the divisive political situation of the 1800 election offers a backdrop for romantic tension.
