Summary
What makes a bird, a bird? Their beaks look different because different kinds of birds eat different things. They have wings, but some kinds don't fly. In this book, readers learn both by reading information about birds, but also by observing birds they see in their community! Five activities show readers ways they can be citizen scientists by tracking bird species as well as their adaptations and habitats. Additionally, readers can find suggestions of how to get involved as a citizen scientist studying birds that are age-appropriate and fun!
Published Reviews
Booklist Review: "The concept of citizen science is empowering: anyone anywhere can observe and record data about the natural world around them. The Citizen Scientist series (4 titles) dives into the study of local feathered friends, imparting introductory information while also recommending ways to quantify appearance and behavior. Colorful diagrams point out basic anatomy and characteristics, and a simple project utilizes the newfound knowledge: spend 20 minutes in one area and identify all of the species you see, keeping running tallies on a spreadsheet, and upload information to official bird counts. The rest of the book follows a similarly winning pattern, introducing new avian information (nesting, migration, feeding) and recommending a coordinating activity. The smart illustrations and bite-size text boxes make reading a breeze, and the variety of projects will appeal to a wide age range."
